Asia-Pacific markets were largely higher Tuesday even as stocks on Wall Street stumbled, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average snapping an eight-day winning streak. Investors in Asia assessed India's inflation numbers. Data released Monday showed consumer price index climbed 4.83% year on year, nearly in line with the 4.8% expected by economists polled by Reuters. India's wholesale inflation reading is due to be released later in the day. Data from the Bank of Japan showed that corporate inflation was steady in April compared with a year earlier, but import prices jumped 6.4% year over year last month, most likely due to the yen's sharp declines.

China and India have not reduced coal generation for electricity, according to a new study, making it harder for Asia's largest carbon emitters to reach their climate targets. While both Asian countries have ambitious plans to cut emissions, heavy reliance on coal — the dirtiest fossil fuel — continues to be the most reliable and affordable way of meet rising electricity demand. The highest increases came from China (+319 TWh) and India (+100 TWh), the study showed. According to the IEA, coal remains the biggest energy source for electricity generation, supplying more than one-third of global electricity. "It will be very difficult to meet targets without a rapid face down in coal.

The cost to obtain a short-term visa to visit Sri Lanka rose from $50 to $100 in April. In response, VFS Global said, "Visa categories were introduced as per the directives of [Sri Lanka's] Department of Immigration and Emigration (DI&E)." Both parties agreed that 30-day travel visas priced at $50 had been reinstated as of May 7. But VFS Global's fees angered many in Sri Lanka's travel industry and led to allegations of corruption by Sri Lankan opposition leaders. "The government of Sri Lanka won't be charging, but the platform … will," he said.

While wealth can bring with it some unconventional problems — such as being denied an invite-only Ferrari and accidentally destroying swathes of coral reefs with a 300-foot yacht — most other problems that the rich face may not be as esoteric as we think. They dismiss rich people's mental health concerns as insignificant and of diminished importance," Paul Hokemeyer, a clinical psychotherapist who treats the ultra rich, told CNBC. Paranoia and distrustWealth can cause people around the super rich to view them as objects, Hokemeyer observed. People who are rich tend to be of higher social status, and those who live in diminished states of power are often drawn to them. Against this backdrop, the super rich tend to become more suspicious of people's motives in associating with them.

European markets are heading for a mixed open at the start of the new trading week, and investors will be keeping a close eye on the latest U.S. inflation figures. April's consumer price index report is due out on Wednesday, with traders hoping that a return to rate hikes is largely off the table for the U.S. Federal Reserve despite a slew of hotter-than-expected inflation prints recently. Overnight, Asia-Pacific markets were mixed as investors assessed China's stronger-than-expected April inflation data; China's consumer price index climbed 0.3% year on year, beating Reuters estimates of a 0.2% rise. India's inflation figures will also be out late Monday, with economists polled by Reuters expecting inflation in the world's fifth-largest economy to slow slightly to 4.8% in April, down from March's 4.85%.

Police Force attend a protest against the foreign agents law as two Americans and one Russian citizen are among 20 detained on May 13, 2024 in Tbilisi, Georgia. Thousands of people took to the streets of Georgia's capital on Monday as part of a last-ditch attempt to prevent the country's government from passing a controversial "Kremlin-style" law on foreign influence. Georgia's Interior Ministry said Monday that two American citizens and one Russian national were among 20 people detained at the rally. Separately, Georgia's Special Investigation Service said it had launched a probe into the alleged used of "excessive force" by law enforcement officers against protesters. Russia, which occupies about 20% of Georgia's internationally recognized territory, has used similar legislation to crack down on independent news media and activists critical of the Kremlin.

Porsche’s iconic 911 is going hybrid
  + stars: | 2024-05-13 | by ( Peter Valdes-Dapena | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
A hybrid Porsche 911, with its gas engine assisted by at least one battery-powered electric motor, will officially be revealed in an online event on May 28. Porsche itself already sells plug-in hybrid models like the Cayenne e-Hybrid SUV and Panamera e-Hybrid four-door car but a hybrid 911 is another matter. This new hybrid model will be the closest Porsche can get to an electric 911 without raising those sorts of philosophical questions. But we do know the hybrid 911 is clearly faster than the current purely gas-powered 911. The faster time indicates the hybrid 911 has greater power due to the addition of electric assistance.
